How ONA forums came to be
Expensive lawsuits and shadowy benefactors create a new menace
The orgins of the onaforums start from a Howard Stern like radio show that ended in 2014, but the events that brought it to the form it is now actually started when the group was sued by one of it’s victims, Patrick Tomlinson. The owner of the site known as “Quasi101” suddenly found himself needing enough legal funding to fight a lawsuit in multiple states.
It seems he did eventually find someone or some group to sponsor him. Quasi would go on to fight and win multiple expensive legal battles in California and Wisconsin.
Adding up the costs in the court filing as well as assuming the sponsor has taken on all hosting costs would put these funds in the 100 thousand dollar range within a year or two. On top of all this, the sponsor would be very aggressive in pursuit of legal costs, in some cases threatening to have people’s homes taken and sold via a lien.
It has been speculated for some time who was behind this funding, but it’s a very tightly kept secret among the group. These screenshots are from a secret subforum on onaforums.net. If you visit the site without an account you only see the basic forum. If you have an account you see the regular forum, but if you’re an authorized user you see several sections invisible to regular users.
I’ll be using some direct quotes from these forums throughout this story, once I make my final post I will include a datafile of all content I can pull.
Here, in a discussion titled “SFWA PREZZIES” a user talks about a lawsuit that Quasi fought against the SFWA.
In another thread titled “Donald Ekpeki: Coming To America” a user comments on the SFWA elections
This user seems to be referring to SFWA president Jeffe Kennedy, who resigned in August of 2024. Finance and Directors at large refer to other positions at the SFWA. These positions were filled November 1st, 2024
The forum also had a very public campaign against Director at Large Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki. Donald was removed from office on October 28, 2024.
Based on these exchanges and the forum’s own public posts, it seems possible that some of the forum’s initial mystery funding may be coming from a person or group seeking to control or destroy the SFWA. Over this time, the SFWA has had it’s membership data leaked, it’s actual administration has been involved in legal action against the onaforums where Adam Rakunas (Secretary 2023) was referenced in court as having received calls asking him “if he sucks baby dicks, I bet you would, I bet you would suck a baby dick in a heartbeat”
These cases that Quasi was able to win pleased his benefactors, who seem to have indefinitely agreed to fund the website and function as a legal guardian. However this wasn’t to be the only source of income for the forums, as we will discuss in a future article.
